The Menomonie Police Department recently acquired its newest member of the force.  Thanks to enormous community support, K-9 unit "Rocket" joined the Menomonie Police Department in early December.  Rocket is a German Shepard that will specialize in drug interdiction and enforcement, along with other normal patrol dog duties.  Officer Mark Pugmire, Rocket's handler, has attended an extensive training program with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department.  This training program, which is world renowned, has taught Rocket and Officer Pugmire the necessary tactics and skills that a K-9 team needs. 

K-9 units are not new to law enforcement and, in fact, are a valuable tool for law enforcement officers.  K-9 units are specially trained dogs of various breeds that assist law enforcement officers with patrol duties, suspect apprehension, building searches, drug searches, bomb and cadaver searches, and public relation presentations.  Police dogs assist officers and community members with their safety and security, and also act as a wonderful liason between community members and the police.  Police dogs trained in drug detection also have reduced the amount and availability of drugs in certain areas, such as schools, by detecting the drugs on the dealer before they reach innocent children.

The Dunn County Sheriff's Department and the Menomonie School District fully support the K-9 program.  The K-9 Team will assist Dunn County Sheriff's Department deputies when requested. The Menomonie School District plans to utilize the K-9 Team in the schools to detect drugs on school grounds and to assist with police presentations to children.  Plans also include work with other area school districts for similar purposes.  The ultimate goal of the K-9 team in the schools is to keep drugs and the catastrophic effects of drugs (truancy, violence, criminal behavior) out of our schools so kids can learn in a safe environment. 

The Menomonie Police Department received an incredible amount of donations for the K-9 program.  The Department wishes to thank each and every person and business that contributed towards the K-9 program.
