Halloween is just a short time away and the Police Department
is looking forward to another safe and fun day this year. The Chief of
Police has published some reminders and guidelines for parents and children to
keep Halloween and "Trick or Treating" a fun and safe time for all.
Please, read the information below.
General Information
Children's visits should be made between 5:30 and 7:30pm.
Residents who wish to welcome the youngsters should light
their porch or exterior lights as a sign of their hospitality.
Children should carry flashlights.
Lawn ornaments, pumpkins, and other items should be secured
as they may present a hazard or temptation for vandalism.
Motorists should exercise extreme caution during "Trick or
Treat" time and be aware of the unpredictable youngsters.
Tips For Parents
Go with your younger children.
If older children are allowed to go with friends, remind them
that there is safety in numbers and never to go alone.
Set limits on how far they are to go.
Set a time limit for trick or treating.
Remind children not to eat any treats until you have examined
them. Discard any treats, however tempting, which are not store wrapped,
and discard any that appear to have been tampered with.
Tips for Children
Call only at homes where the porch light is on.
DO NOT go into any homes where you ask for treats.
Do not eat any candy or fruit without having it examined.
Cross streets only at crossings, look both ways and NEVER
dart out from between parked cars.
Stay away from strange animals.
Be good citizens and good neighbors. Damaging or
destroying the property of others is not funny, it is wrong.
Checklist for Costumes and Masks
Costumes should be flame resistant or flame retardant.
Is the costume so long it will cause tripping? Is
anything hanging which might catch on something?
Try to wear white, or add white trimmings or reflective
strips.
If a mask is worn, make sure that the mouth and nose holes
are large enough for breathing. Make sure the eye holes are large enough
to see well. Can the mask be taken off quickly if necessary?
