RABIES CONTROL AND QUARANTINES If your dog or cat should happen to bite someone you should immediately contact the Menomonie Police Department. Your dog or cat will be placed into quarantine. Unvaccinated animals will be required to be taken to a veterinary clinic within 24 hrs and be quarantined for ten (10) days. Vaccinated animals may remain at home but must be taken to the vet clinic for three- (3) visits during a ten (ten)-day period. The visits shall be on the first day or the day the bite occurred, on the tenth (10th) day, and one time in between. Animals quarantined at home must be kept isolated and walked on a leash by a responsible adult. During the 10-day quarantine the dog or cat will be checked for any signs of illness or a change in behavior. If the owner notices any signs it is crucial that they notify the veterinarian immediately. After the tenth (10th) day the quarantine may be released if the veterinarian certifies that the animal has exhibited no signs of rabies. In the unlikely event that an animal under quarantine does exhibit signs of rabies, state statute requires that the animal is humanely killed and the brain submitted for rabies testing. After the quarantine is released, the animal can be vaccinated against rabies. Rabies vaccinations can not be administered during the observation period.
